Pat Monahan is taking time off from his Grammy award winning band TRAIN to promote his new album “The Last of Seven”.
The venue and time for Reno was changed at the last moment and people were given a refund. There was no charge for the show. The new time was set for 9:30 and Pat took the stage around 9:45. He played with two other outstanding musicians, I only caught one of their names (Luis). They performed for one hour and twenty minutes. It was an acoustic set and it was unbelievable!
If you like Pat Monahan on the radio or CD and have not seen him live you don’t even know what you are missing. I’m not sure technology can handle what a powerful and amazing voice this human being has.
He started off with a slower song that I was unfamiliar with. There were a total of 19 songs performed that evening. The set list was as follows:
Ripple in the water Virginia Cowboys and Indians Cab I fell for you Whole lotta love (Led Zepplin) I am Two ways to say goodbye Happily 4 ever Great Escape Mississippi Drops of Jupiter Her Eyes Always Midnight Someday Superstition (Stevie Wonder)
By the time he got to Led Zepplin a very loud, large woman had pushed her way to the front of the stage. This woman was spilling beer and holding onto peoples heads and just making a nuisance out of herself. While Pat was singing he sang “drunk girl in the front row, you gotta go!” Security finally appeared and removed her.
The feel of this show was very VH1’s Storytellers. The audience of about 250 people made suggestions and Pat sang them. He was very comfortable with the audience and spoke to them and made jokes. He told us this is what it is all about. He spoke before each song and told us a little something about it. One of his new songs from the recent album called, I fell for you is about an abusive relationship. Certain songs the audience sang so loud that you almost could not hear Pat.
Towards the end of the show he had the two other musicians do a guitar solo. The first guy was pretty good. This first guitarist said to the other one “go ahead Luis and kill me”. The next guitarist Luis Carlos Maldonado www.myspace.com/luiscarlosmaldonado was one of the most AMAZING guitarist I have ever heard. When he was finished Pat said, now its my turn. The audience laughed because he had one solo drum and brush sticks so you couldn’t hear him making any noise.
Recently, he performed with Stevie Wonder and sang “Superstition”. What a treat for us when it was the final song of his show. Pat put so much energy into this song that the energy overflowed into the room. The night was truly magical.
Pat is on tour right now. Please check his website or his myspace for a venue near you. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!
